How to accept your imperfections and embrace natural beauty
Firstly, you should understand that beauty is subjective. In other words, beauty is based on personal feelings, tastes or opinions. Every person has different feelings, tastes and opinions. This means every person will have a different opinion on what natural beauty is.
"Today, there are 8 billion people in the world with their different opinions on beauty. You can’t please them all."
What is considered natural beauty differs across times and cultures. For example, the Roman society did not find thin people attractive. A thin person meant a sick person. Although I imagine that some Romans did find thin people attractive.
Today, there are 8 billion people in the world with their different opinions on beauty. You can’t please them all. Nor should you have to try to do that. I do know that people do try. And I know why.
We are all told that something is wrong with us – body, face, hair, skin. This is on purpose. So, you panic and rush off to by beauty products to “fix” whatever it is you are told you need to fix.
Oh, but wait.
Now you have something else that you need to “fix”. And something else…
You can see that there is no end to this.
"If some random person does not think you are naturally beautiful, so what?"
All your life you mill around fixing things rather than making the most of your natural beauty and enjoying life.
In any case, if some random person does not think you are naturally beautiful, so what?
Are you interested in the opinion of a random person?
If yes, then I suggest that you find another article to read.
Or maybe I can convince you to care less about what people think of your looks.
Keep reading if you want to be convinced.
Natural beauty mindset
Natural beauty is about being happy with the way you look. With all the will in the world you will not get a new face. You will not get a new body, arms, legs. And I don’t think you should. You have to make the most of the natural beauty you already have.
"When you look in the mirror try and look at yourself positively"
Your natural beauty is what makes you unique. It is not necessary for every one of us to look like we came from some factory, where they make billions of us. All looking the same. Like robots.
When you look in the mirror try and look at yourself positively. Notice not how old, but how young you look. Look at your face as if you are looking at a friend with affection, interest and respect. Try and make a habit of this.
That is not to say that you should not improve your natural beauty. We all want to look our best. Because that makes us feel our best. It gives us confidence. And confidence is attractive. Confidence is part of natural beauty.
If there is something that really bothers you (and you have the money) then you could think about fixing it. I don’t recommend doing that for every imperfection that you think you have.
There are a number of ways to enhance your natural beauty. It does not include any makeup or plastic surgery. This is what this article is about.
Know that natural beauty comes from within
By this I mean you are what you eat. In other words, everything that you eat will reflect in the look of your hair, your skin, your body.
For example, if you eat burgers all day, your skin will not thank you for it. Yes, there are the lucky few that don’t have side effects. This is temporary. Eventually, the skin will look dull, maybe breakouts will appear. Hair will lose shine and volume. You will experience lack of energy and weight gain. So you will want to go out even less, stay at home more. This will make all the above symptoms worse. It is a vicious cycle.
"For natural beauty eat foods rich in vitamins A (especially if your have dry skin), vitamin B and C."
More importantly, eating unhealthy food all the time affects your health. Not just your natural beauty.
If that doesn’t put you off know this will. People who are overweight can expect to live 10-12 years less on average.
For natural beauty eat foods rich in vitamins A (especially if your have dry skin), vitamin B and C. Vitamin B can be found in beef, seafood, chicken, eggs and dairy. Vitamin A can be found in beef, eggs, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins. Vitamin C can be found in lemons, oranges, kiwi, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli and cabbage.
Don’t forget that the skin on your face is attached to many muscles. Muscles need protein to be healthy and firm. Proteins can be found in milk, cheese, eggs, meat and legumes (beans of all kinds, chickpeas, lentils and peas).
Avoid processed sugar as much as you can. Processed sugar has no nutritional value.
"What you eat is important. What is equally important is how much you eat."
Remember that fizzy drinks like cola also have sugar. Those random snacks like cereal bars have A LOT of sugar. Just check the ingredients if you are not sure.
I am not saying that you shouldn’t have any treats at all. Otherwise, you might go crazy and have a sugar binge. I think once a week is fine.
What you eat is important. What is equally important is how much you eat.
I find that over the years, the plate sizes have increased. People put more and more food on their plates without even realizing. Even if the food is healthy. You can have too much of a good thing. Vegetables should take up the most space on your plate.
You should eat enough so that you are still a little hungry. It is good for people to be hungry. Today, people sit most of the time. You are not using enough energy to justify all the food you eat.
Also, your stomach takes some time to tell your brain that you are full. This means that you should eat slowly and give time to feel full. If you eat quickly, by the time you actually feel full, you have eaten too much. Take your time and eat slowly. Don’t watch TV or read while you are eating.
Being fit means being naturally beautiful
For natural beauty from the inside, you need to make sure that there is regular blood flow to your face and body. This can be done through exercise. And I do not mean going for a speedy run every time.
"Don’t forget that you need to exercise your face"
Exercise can take many forms. For example, a brisk walk, yoga or weight training. All of those things will get your hart beating quicker increasing blood flow to your skin. This will nourish your skin with vitamins and minerals needed for it to be healthy.
Don’t forget that you need to exercise your face. Your face has many tiny muscles and they all need exercise. I find that people forget that. They focus on their thighs, bum or arms. What about the face? If you do not exercise your face muscles, they will sag.
Exercise is a natural beauty treatment for face and body.
Although this article is about natural beauty, if you want to look younger my advice is the same. Exercise. Especially face exercise. No luxury moisturiser, no matter the price, will have the same effect.
How to dress for your body type
Dressing for your body type is important. In other words, you should wear what suits you and what makes you look and feel great. Not what is in fashion at the time. Clothes should enhance your best features. So, if a crop top does not enhance your stomach, then don’t wear it, even if it is in fashion.
"Thin and tight-fitting clothes highlight imperfections"
A short guide to clothes:
- Thin and tight-fitting clothes highlight imperfections. For example, leggings don’t help you look slimmer. Clothes that fit closely to the body can also be uncomfortable.
- Vertical lines on clothes give the appearance of height and can make you look slimmer.
- Loose fitting clothes can have a slimming effect. I don’t mean baggy clothes though. Wide legged trousers are a great example of loose-fitting clothes.
- Black colour has a slimming effect. Though you do not want to wear all black. It will just look like you are going to a funeral all the time.
- Symmetry is attractive. So if you are top heavy, for example, you should add symmetry to your body by adding A line skirts. So it is important to get to know your body shape.
- Buy good quality clothes. Good quality clothes will fit and look much better on you. Good quality clothes will also last longer meaning you have to buy less.
And remember. It takes time to develop your own style. That is ok.
Natural beauty needs time
I know everyone is busy. But you are important and natural beauty needs time. If you do not make time for yourself then nobody will.
Never go to sleep with makeup on. When you sleep your skin and your body has a chance to rest, to repair itself. If you have makeup left on at night, the skin has no chance to rest and repair.
In the evening when it is getting late, make sure you leave some time for your bedtime routine. Wash your face, apply toner and a moisturiser of your choice. I like organic coconut oil. I know I have mentioned coconut oil before. For a good reason.
I have found organic coconut oil has endless skincare uses. I found it suitable for dry and oily skin.
You could do some very basic breathing exercises after your skincare routine. Read your favourite book.
If you go to bed straight after your skincare routine all that goodness that you have put on your skin will get wiped off on your pillow. You want those wonderful vitamins and nutrients to be absorbed by your skin. Your skin will look naturally beautiful in the morning. Over the years this routine will preserve your natural beauty for longer.
"Never go to sleep with makeup on"
On the weekend hold off doing all the chores. Allow time for your natural beauty routine. Have a nice long shower, make your skin smooth with some coffee body scrub and apply some organic body moisturiser. This is a perfect time for a weekly hair mask or a face mask or both. Trust me, once you have done those nice things for yourself, you will feel better.
Don’t forget about your mental health
All of the above will help improve your mental health.
Did you know that exercise releases happy hormones? A happy person is a naturally beautiful person. This is another reason why exercise is so important. Often, exercising takes place outside. A nice park or wildlife path is great for walking and running. This has the added benefit of improving your mental health. Looking at green things like trees or countryside calms a person and reduces stress. Green is also great for the eyes. So, get out there and look at some green things!
Doing things for yourself like applying a face mask or hair mask also makes you feel that you are important. You deserve time for yourself. This has a positive effect on your mental health.
When talking about mental health stress has to be mentioned. Managing stress will help you stay naturally beautiful. This is because stress has a negative effect on your health – inside and out.
For example, when I get stressed, I can get bad skin. Although that also happens when I eat sugar. You get the point.
"Refocusing your thoughts on something positive"
I know it is not so easy to manage stress. So I will provide you with some stress management tips that work for me. Just so you know, these are simple steps. The topic of managing mental health is extensive and will not fit in into a relatively short article.
- Breathing exercises
- Going for a walk or a run – some form of exercise that is enjoyable
- Refocusing your thoughts on something positive. There is always something positive to focus on
- Depending on what is causing the stress, see if you can resolve the problem. Resolve the problem in steps so that you don’t get overwhelmed and stressed again
I know full well that you are so busy and stress can mount up at the end of the day. So instead of throwing things against the wall, find some ways to destress. This helpful article provides some great ideas on how to do that. I definitely adopt many of those tips like practicing gratitude. This helps to refocus your thoughts on positivity.
Why choose natural beauty products
By now you can tell that I advocate for natural beauty products. Why? You might ask. Often, natural beauty products are more expensive and harder to get hold of. This can be the case. But toxic ingredients do not belong with natural beauty. When you are looking after yourself, it is important not to ignore the many harmful chemicals in cosmetics and skincare. You are worth more than that.
"Remember that businesses that sell you products with harmful chemicals are there to make money."
Remember that businesses that sell you products with harmful chemicals are there to make money. Their concern is not your health or wellbeing. For example, most shampoos contain parabens and alcohol which dehydrate your hair. Synthetic fragrances, usually called “parfum”, can remove natural oils from the scalp. This can result in hair growth problems. This is good for business. You are forced to buy more products to fix your dry or thinning hair.
This is often the case for many beauty products. They create the problems.
Clean beauty products help you stay naturally beautiful. Natural beauty products improve your skincare and bodycare routine. There is no need to spend more money on fixing the issues caused by harmful chemicals in cosmetics or skincare.
Some of these issues can be a big deal. My research has shown that some ingredients can cause hormone disruption.
There are non toxic skincare and bodycare products available. I have also saved you some time and done the research.
Final thoughts
Don’t wait for natural beauty to happen by itself. Don’t wait for some miracle cure or an injection to reverse your years. You already have everything you need to look beautiful naturally. I think this is great because you have the power to make the changes. If you want to.
This does mean that you need to put time and effort into looking naturally beautiful. But I say this again. You are worth the time and effort. Don’t forget that following the above advice is not just for those who want to look naturally beautiful. It will surely help you get fit and healthy and live a longer and better life. This advice is sustainable too. You can stick to it for the rest of your life.
There are only positives to being beautiful naturally.
