Sometimes you feel like you have tried everything, from the cheapest to the most expensive, trending face cream. Sadly, this made no difference. Or worse. The face cream made your skin come out in some horrible rash.

We have all been there.

Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! In this blog post, I’ll walk through exactly what to look for in a moisturiser, whether your skin is oily, dry, sensitive, or mature. I’ll also reveal which ingredients in face cream to avoid and how to make the best choice for your unique skin type.

Why Your Moisturiser Matters

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. What you put on your skin matters, not just for your complexion but also for your overall health and the planet. The right moisturiser nourishes your skin. Your skin should not be irritated by any ingredients in skincare.  Look for natural ingredients skincaresustainable packaging and a cruelty-free label.

But here’s the secret: not all moisturizers are created equal.

Many face creams are packed with harsh chemicals and unsustainable ingredients that can do more harm than good. So how do you choose the best one for your skin while staying true to your eco-conscious values?

I will try my best to help you.

And if you'd like to find out your skin type see the helpful infographic below!

Key Natural Ingredients to Look For in a Moisturiser

When selecting a face moisturiser, the ingredients list is your best friend. Look for products that are packed with plant-based, natural ingredients that nourish your skin and support sustainability. Some common ingredients in moisturisers I highlight below.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a soothing, hydrating ingredient that works wonders on all skin types. It’s especially beneficial for sensitive or acne-prone skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Raw Shea Butter

Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, shea butter deeply moisturises and nourishes dry skin. It’s a must-have ingredient if you’re dealing with dry patches or flaky skin. Raw shea butter is also suitable if you have oily skin to help balance out the good oils.

    Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil closely mimics your skin’s natural sebum, making it an excellent choice for balancing oily skin. It hydrates without clogging pores.

    Rosehip Oil

Packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants, rosehip oil helps boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity, making it ideal for mature skin.

    Avocado oil

Avocado oil is an anti-inflammatory helping fight acne and blemishes. It is also helps heal the skin.

Citrus sinensis peel oil (orange peel oil)

Apart from the gorgeous citrusy scent, this oil acts as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. These benefits help improve skin tone and the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

    Plant-derived hyaluronic acid

is a must in any eco-conscious skincare routine. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, delivering intense hydration to the skin. The difficulty here is finding out whether the hylauronic acid is plant-based. To do this, look for moisturisers with a vegan label.

So really, when you look at the ingredients above, they are all great. All the ingredients are beneficial for any skin type.

You might not find all of these in one moisturiser, but look out for any plant-based ingredients.

If you see any of the ingredients listed below, avoid them like the plague.

You will find these ingredients even in the most expensive designer skincare, by the way.

    Ingredients to Avoid in Moisturisers

Just as important as what’s in your moisturiser is what’s not in it. Many conventional moisturisers are full of harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can irritate your skin and harm the environment.

    Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are found in many cosmetics, but they can disrupt hormones and have been linked to various health issues. Although parabens are considered as safe to use I certainly do not consider them safe. Research states otherwise. Also, there is no consideration for the long-term effects of parabens. Choose paraben-free products to keep your skin and hormones balanced. The packaging, or online, should clearly state that the product is paraben-free.

    Sulfates

Commonly found in cleansers, sulfates can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Always look for sulfate-free options.

    Phthalates

Phthalates are the main ingredient in plastics and are present in personal care products. The main types are dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate and dimethyl phthalate. Phthalates are not always shown on the label. Opt for fragrance-free or products that use natural essential oils instead

    Mineral Oils

Mineral oils may sound harmless, but they’re actually derived from petroleum. Vaseline is an example of a mix of mineral oils  and waxes. These oils can clog pores and prevent the skin from breathing, leading to breakouts. Stick with natural plant oils instead.

And if you have Vaseline in your house, bin it.

    Synthetic Fragrances

Many synthetic fragrances contain allergens and irritants that can cause reactions, especially for sensitive skin. Look for moisturizers with natural essential oils or unscented products.

    Tea Tree Oil

This natural antiseptic helps control oil production and fight acne-causing bacteria. It’s perfect for those prone to breakouts.

    Witch Hazel

A natural astringent, witch hazel tightens pores and reduces excess oil. Look for moisturizers with this ingredient if your skin tends to get greasy.

Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide helps regulate oil production, making it ideal for oily and acne-prone skin. All the vitamins from the B family can do wonders for your skin. There are plenty of the B vitamins in brewer's yeast, which I highly recommend.

    Peptides

Peptides are amino acids that help build proteins like collagen and elastin in the skin. They’re a must for anyone looking to firm and plump up their skin.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Skincare: Why It Matters

The sustainability of a product is just as important as its ingredients. Many moisturisers come in plastic packaging or contain unsustainable ingredients, contributing to waste and environmental damage. Here’s what to look for:

    • Sustainable Packaging: Opt for moisturizers in glass jars or refillable containers.
    • Cruelty-Free and Vegan: Look for certifications like Leaping Bunny or PETA Approved, ensuring the product is cruelty-free and vegan.
    • Ethically Sourced Ingredients: Choose products made from sustainably harvested, fair-trade ingredients that don’t harm the environment or exploit workers.

Conclusion: Choose Your Perfect Moisturiser Today

Your moisturiser should do more than hydrate—it should align with your values. Whether you're looking to target oily, sensitive, dry, or mature skin, the right product is out there, filled with natural ingredients that nourish your skin without harming the environment.
